Every parent dreams of a healthy, carefree life for their child. When Ankylosing Spondylitis entered our home, that dream was shaken—but not lost.
About Our Story
My name is Sanyam Sain, and I am the parent of a child living with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the spine and joints.
This story is not just about diagnosis. It is about fear, learning, resilience, and the quiet strength parents discover when their child needs them the most.
Like many families, we had never imagined facing a condition like AS at such a young age.
Yet, this journey taught us that with the right awareness, timely guidance, and emotional support, life can move forward—even with uncertainty.
When We First Noticed Something Wasn’t Right
As parents, you know your child’s normal behavior. You notice when something feels off.
For us, it began with:
- Persistent pain and stiffness didn’t seem age-appropriate
- Difficulty in daily movements
- A visible change in confidence and comfort
At first, we hoped it was temporary, something that rest or time would fix. But as days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, the pain remained. Watching our child struggle without understanding why it was deeply unsettling.
The Emotional Struggle of Not Having Answers
We consulted several doctors, searching for relief and reassurance. While we followed medical advice carefully, real improvement remained limited.
As parents, this phase was emotionally exhausting:
- Seeing your child in pain and feeling helpless
- Not knowing whether the condition would worsen
- Worrying about long-term impact on growth and confidence
When Ankylosing Spondylitis was finally identified, it was a moment of mixed emotions—relief at having a name, and fear of what the future might bring.
Understanding Ankylosing Spondylitis Changed Our Perspective
Learning about AS changed the way we approached our child’s care.
We began to understand:
- Why early diagnosis is critical
- How inflammation affects the spine and joints over time
- That AS is manageable with the right approach
This understanding helped us shift from fear to action. Instead of feeling powerless, we started looking for guidance that focused on both medical care and emotional well-being.
Finding the Right Support Through Antardhwani
Our journey took a positive turn when we connected with Antardhwani, a patient-driven initiative dedicated to Ankylosing Spondylitis awareness and care
Through Antardhwani:
- Our child learned about the condition in a reassuring, age-appropriate way

- We felt supported, not judged or rushed
Most importantly, our child no longer felt alone. Understanding the condition helped rebuild confidence and trust in daily life.
Watching Confidence Return, Step by Step
Improvement didn’t happen overnight, but it happened steadily.
Over time, we noticed:
- Increased confidence in daily activities
- Better understanding of physical limits
- Reduced fear around movement and routine
Each small improvement felt like a victory. As parents, seeing our child regain confidence was more powerful than any test result.
The Emotional Journey of Being a Parent to a Child with AS
Living through your child’s chronic illness is a journey filled with emotional heights and lows.
There were moments of:
- Fear about long-term health
- Emotional fatigue from constant vigilance
- Quiet strength we didn’t know we had
We learned that being strong doesn’t mean having all the answers—it means staying present, informed, and hopeful.
A Message from Me to Other Parents
