Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a form of arthritis that primarily affects the spine, although other joints can become involved. It causes inflammation of the spinal joints (vertebrae) that can lead to severe, chronic pain and discomfort.
It is important to note that back pain and joint pain from ankylosing spondylitis and related diseases is inflammatory in nature and not mechanical.
The body experiences different forms of inflammation which result from these combined medical conditions. Patients who receive appropriate education and receive their ankylosing spondylitis diagnosis early and join supportive communities will achieve improved control of their disease symptoms.
